Zach Doehler

Explorer | Photographer

Vancouver Island, Canada

18 years old, apprentice by day and artist by night, Zach is barely older than a high school student, but what a maturity! And what a stunning eye. His landscapes have everything you can ask for, and much more.

No weather or hardships seem to stop him from grabbing his camera and drone and step out in the wild. Once out there, he's as interested by discovering unique angles with his lens as by the spectacular scenery of his homeland Canada. And most importantly, he has a natural gift for transmitting that love. It's almost as if you could feel the rain pouring on the grass, smell the maple trees in the woods and hear the crisp of the snow under his feet.

"I noticed the skies were gradually starting to light up for sunset, and I just couldn't resist capturing a sunset in a snowy landscape."

Zach Doehler

Here’s a short story Zach kindly shared with us, that I think it sums up pretty well what photographer Zach Doehler and his art is all about; a mix of luck and perseverance:

“I took one photograph earlier this year called "Fire & Ice". The day I took that image, we had just received a heavy snowfall the night before. The whole city and surrounding areas were covered with at least six inches of snow, it was beautiful.

The weather also turned out nice that day. Since it was the weekend, I had time off and naturally wanted to go shoot. I met up with friends and we decided to head up one of the local mountains.

As I was driving up this plowed paved road, I grazed just a bit of powder that was on the side and it pulled my car into a steep ditch. Were it not for the tree that caught me, I would have rolled the car and likely totalled it. Thankfully, I was alright and managed to exit the car safely after it had come to a halt.

After a few hours, two large tow trucks came by and managed to pull my car out of this steep ditch. Despite the few dents and the fact my car was on a nearly 45 degree angle for a few hours, I managed to turn it on once it was back on the pavement.

After coming home, with no photos, I figured I wouldn't go out any more that day after what had happened. But I noticed the skies were gradually starting to light up for sunset, and I just couldn't resist capturing a sunset in a snowy landscape. So, I went and hopped in my dented car and drove down the road.

I ended up capturing a photograph of a road leading off into the sunset, that later became one of my most popular images to date. That sunset ended up being quite the silver lining to what seemed like a failed day.”

"A couple of years ago, I did some hiking in Glacier and Mount Revelstoke National Parks located here in British Columbia, Canada. I wasn't able to do any major overnight hikes, but I did get the chance to do some day hikes that led to some stunning views such as this one. I seem to remember this hike taking roughly 3 hours one-way, but man was it ever worth it. The view was incredible, and the conditions were perfect that day. The light was soft and the skies had fantastic context, it was fantastic for photography. I hope I get the chance to return again one day." - Zach Doehler

Enormity

"After a day of exploring the national parks of the Canadian Rockies, we were en route back to Calgary, AB to meet with some family for dinner. We were already on a bit of a time crunch, as we had a few hundred kilometers to drive and only a few hours to do so. But I couldn't resist pulling to the side of the road a couple of times to capture some pictures. This was one of those times, I was amazed by the enormity of this mountain face compared to the small mountain highway we were driving. I really wanted to capture a photo that depicted that scale. But only so much scale can really be expressed through an image, you really have to see it for yourself to realize just how big these mountains truly are. The Rockies sure are an amazing place." - Zach Doehler

"While exploring the Bow Valley Parkway of Banff National Park, we stumbled across this stunning view of Castle Mountain. This mountain was discovered in 1858 and named accordingly due to its castle-like features. It's amazing how much this mountain naturally resembles a massive fortress. I wanted to really capture that scale and emphasize the mood of the scene. So later on in the post, I enhanced the warm tones that were present at the time and then I blended in some night elements to create this moody atmosphere." - Zach Doehler
